is in real trouble. Its been a long time since my country has produced a hit to sustain all the little films going on. With the closure of Film Four in England things are looking less than rosy for you guys also. Any thoughts? Must we all pack our bags and head for the states?

Good to see im not the only bitter person on the board!
I am basically being told that when I finish film school I will have to emmigrate. Thats a sorry state of affairs indeed. The bleedin Celtic Tiger never helped the film industry it seems. I find this whole thing pretty **** frustrating. Everyone here talks about getting work in Hollywood and other shite, but if you cant get a job in your own country first...bah. I have to give up my friends and family just to get a job and survive.
Still, the Sunday times wondors if a maverick will appear from nowhere to reinvigorate Irish Film. I guess that maverick could turn out to be one of the people I know, but thats being quite optomistic. But I keep thinking that if someone could just make a good film with a wide appeal it would really take off, because the competition is almost nothing.
Seriously what are the Uk prospects like?

Why don't you go into advertising. It seems to be a better route up than any other, and I assume that advertising is still required.
channel 4 went down the pan years ago. When it started there were regular non-english language films. Kurosawa and the like. Then they reckoned on making a few bob through film on four, except you have to pay over the Murdoch odds, and they have bottled off terrestial digital.
Suppose I could go to the cinema.

genny things in scotland are a'rite, from talking to a few film makers in edinburgh - the general concensus is that there are not many feature films being made but more the BBC and other main channels (itv and C4) making their tv dramas are the biggest money spinners and seem to employ mainly local crews... surprising as it may seem the biggest employer is hallmark entertainment films... which is fair enough, as they do seem to "try" and get local junior members of the crew - if you wanna get a better outlook on the film industry in scotland go to http://www.scottishscreen.com/
eightmovies - your right you could go into advertising, many people do, but some produciton and technical crew choose not to because of (1) their morals, ie. not selling out (2) you only work with the people for a week so it pretty **** - you dont get to know them too well (3) you dont have much creative freedom, all the creative elements are tightly controlled by the people with the money... however some film makers thrive on advertising - im of the if 'i need to put food in my mouth and keep a roof over my head' variety, so needs must
lets not let this degenerate into another f?ckin advertising discussion pish
